We got on the road about 7:40 am. I decided to take a route I had never driven before. We crossed the North Pass instead on Monarch Pass. It added about an hour at least to our drive. It is a small 2 lane curvy road. It was a gorgeous drive albeit slow. When you made the summit you drove in high mountain pastures before you headed down. So glad we went that way. Our only hiccup was about 10 miles from the first town of Saguache we came over a slight rise and there was 3 Mule deer standing right beside our lane in the road. 2 good bucks and 1 doe. I was breaking as hard as I could but there was no way to stop if they moved into our lane. Luckily they just stood and Susan got a close up view of them. Cleaned our britches out and headed on. We boondock at the top of a mountain between Lake George and Eleven Mile State Park. We turned off 24 to come in the west side of the park. As soon as we got on the road it became gravel. It was very washboarded and we could only go about 5 mph for two miles. I told Susan I don't remember this road being gravel. She said it turns into pavement before the park. Well it never did. it got better but was graded all the way untill we turned off onto our forest service road. I know it used to be paved, they must be redoing the road. Will check it out tomorrow. There was a group of campers right as we got off the road. we saw no one else till we got to my favorite spot. Its always a challenge to get level in the mountains and it took me a little bit. The weather was nice about 74 with a slight breeze. We had a really nice evening.
